Humankind PC performance report - Graphics card benchmarks
By Chad Norton on August 20th, 2021 at 01:15pm - original article from game-debate

The time is finally upon us to take human civilization through the ages, from the neolithic tribes of yonder, to the modern contemporary setting we know today. Amplitude's latest historical strategy game is here and with big shoes to fill, but regardless how it plays, how does it perform? And what kind of hardware is needed to play Humankind at its best? We take a look at the PC performance benchmarks for Humankind...

First of all, in this PC performance benchmark article for Humankind, we benchmark a range of graphics cards going from the higher-end RTX 2060; the mid-range GTX 1060 which is the recommended GPU; and to the lower-end R9 380 which is close to the minimum required GPU.

Then we go through the FPS test results of each graphics card running at 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions. From there we can see the performance of the minimum and recommended system requirement graphics cards and consider how well optimized Humankind really is.

Humankind unfortunately does not include an in-game benchmarking tool, so for the results below we started in a late game with multiple units on screen and most of the map explored. We then walked around and explored for a bit before getting into a battle with one of the enemies. Since most of your time in Humankind will be doing just that, we felt this run to be pretty representative of the majority of your gameplay experience in Humankind.

With that in mind, let's jump into the PC performance benchmarks for Humankind...

Finally, at 4K the FPS performance of the GTX 1060 is not too great, though still playable up to Good graphics settings. Unfortunately, at Beautiful or above settings the frame rate drops below 30fps, and in our experience was uncomfortable to play, though it won't affect your actual in-game performance.

Overall the GTX 1060 is perfect for playing Humankind at 1080p up to Fantastic graphics settings depending on your preference. At 1440p the situation is the same but a little more demanding, though still playable even on Fantastic graphics settings. At 4K however, it is recommended not to select Beautiful or Fantastic graphics settings due to the low frame rates, as we found this actual became uncomfortable to play, though not completely unplayable.

Conclusion

Overall, taking a look at the results above Humankind is a surprisingly demanding game on modern hardware when set to the highest graphics settings. However, the presets available have a wide range of performance to choose from, and thankfully Humankind does not need to be played at 60fps for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

That said, if you want to play Humankind at its best you will need a pretty modern and powerful GPU to play at 4K on Max graphics settings. The RTX 2060 seems to be perfect for that, however, performance may be dipping too close to sub-30fps territory that you may need a more powerful graphics card to do so.

For lower-end hardware, Humankind is also pretty demanding, but thankfully still seems to get playable frame rates on Low graphics settings at 1080p. Although it doesn't reach 60fps performance it is still playable and enjoyable, and so possibly hardware even lower than an R9 380 should be able to run Humankind just fine.

It is also worth mentioning that performance can vary depending on what you are doing in the game and what camera zoom level you are at. Additionally, the "Simplified Army" graphics setting mentions using 1 pawn per unit instead of multiple, which theoretically should improve performance in large battles. Although our tests didn't show much improvement, the effect may be more noticeable on lower-end hardware where squeezing every frame you can is preferable.

As always, we welcome any and all feedback from you guys as well with your experience of hardware configurations and FPS performance/quality settings. That way we can all better gauge how well our systems will be able to run Diablo 2 Resurrected.
