This PC performance article focuses on Rage 2 frame rates and will provide us with a graphics card frame rate guide for when the game launches on May 14th. We will continue to update as more Rage 2 frame rate data is published around the net, as we complete our internal hardware analysis on the game, but especially as you submit your FPS results to Game-Debate.
To start things off we will be using a combination of user-submitted data taken from the similarly specced Just Cause 4, the official Bethesda system requirements for Rage 2, our own Just Cause 4 benchmarks, and GD’s own number crunching database.
It should be said that this is an imperfect science, although you'll note from our previous predictions that it ultimately ends up fairly accurate. A number of moving parts can affect the results though, including new graphics card drivers, hardware-specific bugs, game engine optimisation, performance bottlenecks, and other factors. Despite that, we expect our experience and data should put us roughly in the right ballpark in terms of frame rates, giving us a guide to how well PC systems can run the Avalanche and if Software's Rage 2. and we will, of course, revisit this article once Rage 2 releases.
Rage 2 Game Engine
Somewhat naively, we'd always assumed that id Software's involvement in Rage 2 meant the first-person shooter would be running on id Tech 6. Sadly, it isn't. Rage 2 runs on Apex Engine 2.0, the same engine as Just Cause 4. We know the Apex Engine is well suited to large, open-world environments, of course, but we also know its performance is trashy compared to id Tech 6. Just Cause 4 did not run well at all, which obviously raises a few question marks over Rage 2's performance.
At this point, Bethesda has not confirmed yet whether Rage 2 will use the Vulkan or DirectX 11/12 graphics APIs. Just Cause 4 was a DirectX title, so Rage 2 may follow suit. id Software prefers Vulkan for its own titles though, which would mean boosted performance on AMD hardware.
Rage 2 hardware requirements compared to Just Cause 4 PC Hardware
Rage 2's PC system specs are almost a complete match for Just Cause 4's. The recommended system requirements for Rage 2 are exactly the same except for recommended RAM. It's 8GB for Rage, and 16GB for Just Cause 4, but this means little in terms of frame rates.
The recommended graphics cards and CPUs for Rage 2 are identical to Just Cause 4's recommended hardware.
When it comes to the minimum specs though, things change slightly. Rage 2 bumps up both the minimum spec CPUs and the GPUs, setting the GTX 780 and Radeon R9 280 as the bottom line, paired with a core i5-3470 or Ryzen 3 1300X. According to our hardware database, this represents an estimated 18% increase in terms of the minimum specs for Rage 2.
Using this data, we can then extrapolate what are hopefully reasonable performance predictions for Rage 2. Lower-end hardware should suffer a 15-20% dip in frame rates compared to Just Cause 4, while higher-end hardware should achieve the same frame rates, or perhaps even higher. We have accurate benchmark data from 16 modern GPUs in relation to Just Cause 4, and we've used this to provide Rage 2 frames per second performance predictions.
This Rage 2 PC predicted performance data is based upon Rage 2 using the DirectX graphics API. Should Avalanche and id Software use Vulkan, this curveball would dramatically impact the results. AMD Radeon hardware is very well optimised for Vulkan and this would lend AMD graphics cards a significant performance advantage.
