Nvidia has officially launched the GeForce GTX 1650 desktop graphics card, as well as introducing the first GeForce 16 Series gaming laptops.
GeForce GTX 1650 Desktop Graphics Card Announced
In terms of the GeForce GTX 1650, there aren't exactly many surprises to be found here. The $149/£138 budget graphics card is exactly what we were expecting based upon last week's leaks. Specs-wise, nearly everything was correct, bar the final clock speeds. It utilises a Turing TU117 GPU with 896 CUDA cores, 56 TMUs, and 32 ROPs. It comes with a 1485 MHz core clock and 1665 MHz boost clock as standard, although this may change dependent on AIB factory overclocks.

Performance-wise, Nvidia is touting the GeForce GTX 1650 as twice the speed of the GeForce GTX 950 and 70% faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 when playing at 1080p screen resolution. That's not a bad increase, in truth, and puts the GTX 1650 in good stead as a solid middle-of-the-road 1080p video card. If you’re mulling over a GeForce GTX 1650 vs a GTX 1660, the GTX 1650 should offer around 65-70% of the FPS of the GTX 1660 at 1080p.
However, we are looking at a 37% increase in price generation-on-generation. It’s something we’ve grown accustomed to with the GTX 16 series and (more severely) the RTX 20 series, but it does somewhat take the sheen off these performance boosts.
Those who are after something that's not too power intensive will be pleased to discover it does indeed have a TDP of just 75W, meaning no additional power connectors are required. This makes it a tempting choice for a budget, small form factor PC build or HTPC. Be warned that custom cards with overclocks may require a 6-pin power connector.
Unfortunately, Nvidia hasn’t made the GeForce GTX 1650 available to press prior to launch, so there’s no performance gauge aside from Nvidia’s own promises. The latest driver has just arrived with GTX 1650 support, but anyone buying one of these budget graphics cards today is going in blind. GeForce GTX 16 Series Notebooks Launched
And the secondary announcement from Nvidia today is the arrival of GeForce GTX 16 Series notebooks., These are limited to laptops with the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or GeForce GTX 1650, with more 80 designs available from OEMs today starting at $799.
Again, we’re limited to Nvidia’s touted performance here, but Team Green claims 75% of notebook gamers are running with GTX 960M performance or weaker. The mobile GeForce GTX 1650 is 2.5x faster than the GTX 950M, while the mobile GTX 1660 Ti is 4x faster. This really does bump up the baseline standard for laptop gamers, provided folks are prepared for an upgrade.
However, Nvidia is comparing graphics cards two generations apart, which is disingenuous at best, and blatantly misleading at worst. It should come as very little surprise that the GeForce GTX 1650 is significantly faster than a four-year-old, 'M' class mobile chip. Still, there's no arguing with Nvidia's data that most laptop gamers are at the low-end in terms of performance, and on that front the GeForce GTX 16 Series notebooks could make for a tempting upgrade proposition.
