Just Cause 4 PC Frame Rate Performance Analysis Predictions
By Jon Sutton on November 30th, 2018 at 05:29pm - original article from game-debate

For this PC performance article, we're going to take a looked at the expected performance of Just Cause 4 on PC. This includes predicted frame rates for JC4 across a variety of graphics cards using our GPU frame rate guide, as well as a comparison of Just Cause 3 performance with Just Cause 4 fps.

Just Cause 4 is a physics-heavy open-world action game developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Square Enix. It is due to launch on PC this Tuesday, December 4th.

This will be considered an evolving editorial article that we will continue to update as more Just Cause 4 frame rate data is published around the net; as we complete our internal hardware analysis on the game, but especially as you submit your FPS results to Game-Debate. The more data you can help add, the more accurate the results will become for this and future titles.

To start things off we will be using a combination of user-submitted data taken from the previous game in the series, Just Cause 3, the official Square Enix system requirements for Just Cause 4, and GD’s own number-crunching database.

While you've been making your way around GD you may have noticed our new Most Demanding Games feature. The maths bods have put together an algorithm that calculates how demanding each game is based on the system requirements provided. This provides us with a handy list of the 100 Most Demanding Games on PC right now, with Just Cause 4 sitting at number 5 on the list. In a nutshell, Just Cause 4 is going to be a very demanding game on PC based on the system specs, as well as based on our knowledge of 2015's Just Cause 3.

The interesting thing about comparing PC hardware to the expected frame rate performance is that data influences change all the time; drivers are released, unexpected hardware performance bottlenecks or perhaps specific graphics card bugs. Despite that, we expect our experience and data should put us roughly in the right ballpark in terms of frame rates, giving us a guide to how well PC systems can run the new Just Cause 4 2018  and we will revisit this article once JC4 releases and enough user benchmarks have been fed in. With that in mind, this Just Cause 4 graphics card frame rate article will serve as a place for us to share our collective experiences and hardware knowledge, particularly in regards to Just Cause 4 and the new Apex game engine which will also be used for Rage 2.

Just Cause 4 hardware requirements compared to Just Cause 3 Hardware

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since Just Cause 3 launched. Three years worth of hardware advancements. In that respect, Just Cause 4 is a heck of a lot more demanding that Just Cause 3, a game that doesn't even crack the Top 100 Most Demanding Games. In order to meet the recommended requirements for JC4 you need a PC that is overall 135% faster than that needed to hit the recommended specs for Just Cause 3.

In terms of how this shakes out in reality, the recommended GPU has increased from a GTX 780 or Radeon R9 290 for JC3 all the way up to a GTX 1070 or Vega 56 for Just Cause 4. Recommended memory has also doubled from 8GB to 16GB, while the CPUs demonstrate a far more modest increase from a Core i7-3770/FX-8350 up to a Core i7-4770/Ryzen 5 1600.

It's not just in the system requirements that the two games bear few similarities. Just Cause 4 is the first game in the series to utilise the new Apex game engine which is capable of extreme physics-based weather effects such as tornadoes. While the level of detail in-game may not have improved massively, there's probably a heck of a lot more number-crunching going on under the hood to calculate entire buildings being torn up and hurled into the air.

Last time around, Just Cause 3 was much more optimised for Nvidia and Intel hardware than it was for AMD, causing some significant stuttering effects for AMD Radeon users. We're definitely hoping this isn't the case this time around in Just Cause 4 but it's certainly something for AMD users to keep an eye on during next week's launch. The Apex engine is uncharted territory and could also provide some clues towards Rage 2's performance next year.

Just Cause 4 1080p Ultra Setting Frame Rate Prediction Analysis

Let's now take a look at some frame rates that were returned on Ultra settings for Just Cause 3 and gain an understanding of what that might mean for gamers looking to play Just Cause 4 on Ultra settings. Much higher frame rates should hopefully be achievable on lower graphics settings.

GPU Just Cause 3 Just Cause 4 (Predicted)
GeForce GTX 1060 60 42
GeForce GTX 1080 70 65
GeForce GTX 960 48 28
GeForce GTX 960M 30 17
GeForce GTX 970 60 37
Radeon R9 390 40 25
Radeon R9 390X 67 40
Radeon R9 270X 41 26

Just Cause 4 1080p Ultra Setting Frame Rate Prediction Analysis

Based upon the increased system requirements for Just Cause 4, as well as the recommended GPUs and VRAM and the user-submitted benchmarks for Just Cause 4, we are expecting frame rates to drop roughly 30-50% in Just Cause 4 compared to Just Cause 3, depending on the video card. Those with less than 4GB VRAM are going to be hit the hardest and it could be a struggle to achieve playable frame rates in Just Cause 4 on Ultra at 1080p.

Just as with Just Cause 3, hitting a locked 60fps in Just Cause 4 is going to be tricky. Based on Avalanche's own system requirements, a GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon Vega 56 will be required. However, the GeForce GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 580 should be able to hit 60fps on Medium/High.

Right so based on the benchmark data available to us from user-submitted data this should give us enough to start the JC4 frame rate discussion off. Feel free to share your own Just Cause 3  FPS results below and deduct  50% from the score if you have

Once Just Cause Four releases, we will update this article with a section on our official frame rates, coupled with a section on your user submitted FPS once enough data has been submitted to the site. So please visit this page to add them so we can compile your data into this comprehensive real-world Frame Per Second report for Just Cause 4. The more data that’s added, the more accurate our FPS results can be for JC4 and other future AAA games.
