Nvidia is almost assuredly launching its Turing-powered GeForce RTX graphics cards this coming Monday, August 20th. But, in an interesting twist, rumours are now popping up suggesting we may also be set for a top-end Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti reveal as well.
The typical cadence or Nvidia GPU releases is to hit the market with the high-end x70 and x80 graphics cards, working down the pecking order to the x60, x50, mobile chips, etc, before circling back around to deliver a full-fat x80 Ti that sits at the top of the family.
It would be incredibly surprising to see Nvidia even mention a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti this early, let alone release one. There’s just too much money to be made from folks double dipping, although perhaps the rumoured small performance difference between the current GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and the upcoming RTX 2080 could lead to Nvidia offering a higher-end option.
We’re still firmly ensconced in the rumour mill for this one, with VideoCardz claiming AIB partners have confirmed to them that custom versions of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and GeForce RTX 2080 are inbound.
In terms of specs, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti would likely be based on a higher-end Turing Quadro GPU, possibly something along the lines of a Quadro RTX 6000 but with a significant reduction in video memory. This GPU packs 4,608 CUDA Cores compared to the 3,072 CUDA Cores found on the cut-down RTX 5000. This would in the region of 50% faster than the RTX 2080 if true, and certainly a worthwhile upgrade for current GeForce GTX 1080 Ti owners.
While we’re deep in speculation territory here, could you see Nvidia launching an RTX 2080 Ti model sooner rather than later? Or do you think Team Green is going to hold fire until next year for its most powerful gaming card? Let us know your thoughts below!
