Intel Reveals Mammoth 28-Core CPU - Demoed at 5GHz Across All 28 Cores

Intel has got an absolute beast of a CPU waiting in the wings. Revealed today during Intel’s presentation at Computex Taipei, it’s an unprecedented 28-core processor. Suddenly, Intel’s 18-core, 36-thread Intel Core i9-7980XE begins to look a little puny. Likewise, AMD’s 16-core / 32-thread Threadripper 1950X is being knocked down a peg or two.

The wonders don’t begin and end at the core count though. Intel demoed the unnamed CPU onstage during the event, showcasing all 28-cores running at 5GHz clock speed. That’s an incredible feat, although at the moment it’s unclear whether this is going to be achievable in the retail versions. Intel would’ve made this engineering sample absolutely sing in order to achieve this, but it’s certainly done its job in wowing us.

During the demonstration, the 28-core Intel CPU achieve a Cinebench R15 score of 7,334. For a slice of perspective, the Core i9-7980XE can achieve a score of around 4,900, while the Threadripper 1950X hits around 3,050.

Unfortunately, other details on the CPU were sadly scant. We have no name yet, nor a price, although we can safely guess it’s going to at least match the $1999/£1699 asking price of the Intel Core i9-7980XE. In all likelihood though, it’s going to be even more expensive.

What Intel has said is that this chip will be reading to ship by the fourth quarter of 2018. It’ll be using the X299 platform.

For gaming uses, this CPU is far, far beyond what could be deemed necessary or even useful. It does provide a little taster of where Intel is heading in the years to come though, particularly as we gradually shift to higher core counts. Last year, quad-core practically became the baseline for new processors, and it’s only a matter of time until it creeps up.
