Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia PC Performance Report
By Jon Sutton on May 4th, 2018 at 02:16pm - original article from game-debate

In recent years, Creative Assembly has really begun stepping up the number of releases. While Total Warhammer has been a bit of a distraction for a couple of years now, CA has sized up considerably and is now ready to deliver both historical and fantasy-themed grand strategy, encompassing mainline titles and new, slightly smaller Total War Saga series. Thrones of Britannia is the first of these efforts. It's set in Britain around 878 AD and depicts a war among rival clans as well as the Viking invasion.

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is based on 2016's Attila engine, but how does PC performance shape up? Let's find out.

By now you know the score with Total War. This time around though, TWS: ToB is based on Total War: Attila rather than the most recent Total War: Warhammer 2, so the graphics options have minor differences to accommodate this. Probably the biggest change is there is no option for DirectX 12. Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is DX11 only. Aside from this, there are just a few tiny changes like the removal of the Porthole Quality setting, as well as Fog effects. To that end, Thrones of Britannia is a marginally worse looking game than Total Warhammer 2, although you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference.

One oddity that is worth pointing out is there appears to be an error in the tracking of video memory. We're using a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB for the benchmarks, and yet the graphics options menu in Total War Sagas only registers 3GB VRAM.

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia Benchmarks

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia benchmarks and frames per second analysis performed on GeForce GTX 1060 6GB | Intel i7-5820K | 16GB DDR4

For our TWS: Thrones of Britannia benchmarks, we used a GeForce GTX 1060 equipped with 6GB video memory. It’s backed up by 16GB DDR4 memory and an Intel Core i7-5820K CPU.

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia comes with a built-in benchmark tool. From a brief mess around with gameplay, the benchmark does appear to be representative of a typical chaotic battle, making it a good marker of in-game performance.

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 1080p, 1440p, 4K Benchmarks

  1080p 1440p 4K
Low 194 135 70
Medium 138 103 55
High 89 77 41
Ultra 64 48 21
Extreme 43 27 17

Performance is, by and large, fantastic. The frame rates hold steady for the majority of the benchmark, with minimum FPS typically being around 66% of the average FPS for most of the tests. There is an absolutely huge difference in visual quality between Low and Extreme in Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, although the graphical difference between Ultra and Extreme is negligible when considering the performance hit. For 1080p gamers with a GTX 1060, we recommend playing at Ultra, whiling 1440p players should target custom settings between High and Ultra.

It is possible to play Total War Saga: ToB in 4K with a GeForce GTX 1060, although it doesn't necessarily come recommended. High is perfectly playable but you may experience sub-30fps dips occasionally. Our recommendation here would be to drop the game down to 1440p for a smooth experience.

For long-time Total War fans, the results shouldn't come as a surprise. Total War Saga is based on a two-year-old game, which is itself based on 2013's Rome II. It looks better than Rome II, but it's not the massive leap you may expect.total war thrones of britannia
