Pinning just how and what the Spectre and Meltdown security vulnerabilities can affect is an endlessly tricky process. After it originally emerged as an Intel-specific CPU flaw, the likes of AMD, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Mozilla, and Nvidia all hurriedly issued patches in order to mitigate the flaw.

It now turns out that Nvidia is confident its graphics cards are totally immune to Meltdown, and that its recent driver security update was purely to patch CPU security vulnerability in regards to its GeForce software.

“Our GPUs are immune, they’re not affected by these security issues,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during a Q&A. “What we did is we released driver updates to patch the CPU security vulnerability. We are patching the CPU vulnerability the same way that Amazon, the same way that SAP, the same way that Microsoft, etc are patching, because we have software as well.”

In reiterating this claim, Huang said: “I am absolutely certain that our GPU is not affected”.

So there you go then, straight out of the horse’s mouth. Nvidia believes its GPU hardware is immune to any currently reported Meltdown security issues. Your GeForce graphics cards can breathe a sigh of relief.
