The Surge System Requirements and Release Date Revealed
By Jon Sutton on March 17th, 2017 at 02:20pm - original article from game-debate

Dark Souls-likes are a 10-a-penny these days, but few of them can ever hope to hold a candle to From Software's magnum opus. The Surge is looking to change all that. It's unashamedly sci-fi Dark Souls, but we can't just gloss over the fact it's sci-fi. This makes The Surge fundamentally different from an aesthetic point of view, as well as affording developer Deck13 the ability to introduce robot limb chopping mechanics. You can hack off specific parts, Horizon-style, weakening your opponents. The Surge has been previewing very strongly, and Focus has just announced it's out on May 16th. If sci-fi Dark Souls sounds like your thing, here are the official The Surge PC system requirements.

The Surge Minimum System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5 GHz or AMD FX-8320 3.5 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB System Memory
  • GPU RAM: 1 GB Video Memory
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti or AMD Radeon R7 360
  • DX: DirectX 11
  • HDD: 15 GB available space
  • Additional: Internet Connection required to activate

The Surge Recommended System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 3.6 GHz or AMD FX-8370 4.1 GHz
  • RAM: 16 GB System Memory
  • GPU RAM: 4 GB Video Memory
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB
  • DX: DirectX 11
  • HDD: 15 GB available space
  • Additional: Internet Connection required to activate

That there is a fairly hefty set of system requirements, particularly for a game which, it's fair to say, isn't AAA. It's not often my beloved Intel Core i5-4690K comes in at the minimum specs. In terms of The Surge's minimum system requirements, the graphics cards are the outliers. These are nice and low-end with The Surge only demanding 1GB VRAM. Everything around them is pretty demanding though, including 8GB system memory and those relatively high-end, quad-core processors. Considering the similarity in performance between the minimum and recommended CPUs for The Surge on PC, I'm hoping we can actually get away with much lower-end CPUs.

Everything but the CPU basically doubles for The Surge's recommend requirements. You're now talking a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon RX 480 4GB, both fairly modern GPUs in the $150-200 range. If you paid that much for your graphics card in the last two years, you're all set to play The Surge on at least mid to high graphics settings.

I balked a bit also when I saw the 16GB RAM requirement. Precious few games break the 8GB mark and I can't see The Surge being one of them. It's looking likely 8GB is going to be plenty, however if you want to run The Surge alongside video capture or streaming programs, you want to spring the cash to get 16GB RAM.

As ever, remember you can always check out how well your PC can run the The Surge System Requirements here, where you can check benchmarking and performance from other users. Compare your graphics card to the The Surge GPU benchmark chart and we also have a The Surge Frames Per Second system performance chart for you to check.the surge
